Seeking: “Community-cations” Lead

Beautiful Trouble seeks new Communications Coordinator

Beautiful Trouble is a book, card deck, web toolbox, creative campaign incubator, and international network of artist-activist-trainers helping grassroots movements be more creative, effective, and irresistible.

About Beautiful Trouble

Since its publication in 2012, Beautiful Trouble: A Toolbox for Revolution has become a go-to activist resource, selling over 25,000 copies in 8 languages. During that time, we’ve trained more than 15,000 people via 250+ trainings in 25 countries. And we’re still going strong: just recently, we released a special Africa Edition of Beautiful Trouble and launched a crowdfunder for our new companion toolbox, Beautiful Solutions, due out in Spring 2021.

From our 500-word “chapters” to our strategy game that crystallizes generations of social movement wisdom into 99 cards, everything we write is action-ready, the size of a single idea that you can put to work. We are constantly asking ourselves how to get these resources into the hands of folks who can make the best use of them now. We use our social media channels to amplify creative actions in real time (see: @beautifultroublehqHoly Shit! 7 Things to do instead of hoarding toilet paper, and this piece on creative actions in the BLM movement) and are constantly adding new pieces to our toolbox (most recently, the People’s Shock Doctrine), so our tools can evolve alongside the movements we serve.

The role

We are seeking a new Communications Coordinator to amplify the reach of our toolbox, help us get organizing resources to those who most need them and inspire creative action for justice. This person will manage our digital strategy and maintain and grow our social media channels. We think of this position as “community-cations” — you’ll be responsible for building the wider Beautiful Trouble (BT) community of practice. You’ll also be the “CEO of external affairs.”

Responsibilities

  • Direct communications strategy for BT as a whole, and our component projects (see sample list below). You’ll need to be able map out a communications strategy and stay agile, always ready to revise plans in response to real-world developments, the needs of our collaborators, our fast-moving projects, and an ever-changing world

  • Coordinate external communications needs/offerings of our many teams (editorial, translations, fundraising, training)

  • Maintain and grow audiences: Identify and target key audiences and communities, matching channels of communication accordingly. Maintain, manage, and grow Beautiful Trouble’s social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), including designing posts and graphics and executing content delivery

  • Manage email list/database on ActionNetwork, curate supporters, and set up email blasts

  • Harness partnerships: Develop communications that leverage existing and potential partnerships, and coordinate assets for partner outreach

  • Engage key influencers in wider Beautiful Trouble community

  • Promote key projects and products including: Rapid-response articles, new online toolbox content, new books & translations, training events, fundraising drives, and creative action campaigns

Desired skills

  • Proficiency with Action Network, MailChimp, WordPress, Google Docs, Canva or other graphic design tools, Zoom, WhatsApp, Signal, Basecamp

  • Social media prowess: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

  • Strong, demonstrable writing skills

  • Capability to do very basic video editing

  • Passion and experience organizing for justice

  • At ease working collaboratively and thinking strategically

  • Strong self-starter with ability to manage work remotely as part of a distributed team

  • Sly, robust sense of humor absolutely mandatory. This is no joke. Repeat, no joke. Will be subject to quarterly review.

Compensation

All Beautiful Trouble core staff work part-time and receive hourly pay at an equal rate of $30/hr across the team. This is a part-time consulting job with variable hours depending on project launch dates, breaking news, and such, in accordance with frequent social media posting needs. We have budgeted an average of 6-8 hours a week for this position.

Application Process

Please submit a cover letter and resume to this form. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Beautiful Trouble aspires to be an inclusive and liberatory project. We value a diversity of life experiences and perspectives on our team. We strongly encourage applicants who identify as persons of color, women, and/or gender nonconforming to apply. We are an equal-opportunity employer.
